Abstract:  Preparation, characterization and theoretical analysis of liquid-crystal based optical diffractive structures for visible light whose diffraction efficiency can be effectively tuned by mT magnetic fields will be presented. The in-plane switching geometry in which the driving field is oriented in the plane of the diffractive structure was selected for investigation, because this geometry is quite difficult to be realized in electrically tunable diffractive systems. The obtained results provide a proof of principle of operation of a new type of tunable liquid-crystalline diffractive optical elements that pave the way towards novel contactless schemes for control of optical diffraction phenomena.
