Abstract: Adding a small amount of photo-isomerizable derivative to the matrix of a liquid-crystalline elastomer (LCE) opens up various possibilities for optical manipulation of mechanical, thermal, electrical and also optical properties of the material. Due to collective response of the medium to the trans-to-cis photo-isomerization process, illumination-induced modifications of optical refractive index in light-sensitive LCEs are several orders of magnitude larger than in conventional light-sensitive elastomers. Micro-patterning of LCEs consequently provides a very convenient method for fabrication of tunable diffractive optical elements (DOEs) that can be manipulated by various external stimuli. Some unusual characteristics of such DOEs that appear due to intriguing fundamental properties of the LCE materials will be presented.
